On July 1, 1892, Dr. Adolf Hommel’s company Nikolay & Co. was entered in the commercial register at the district court in Hanau am Main—two years after Hommel AG had already been founded in Zurich.
On April 26, 1922, the company moved its headquarters to Altona/Elbe (near Hamburg). And in the commercial register, it was listed as “Dr. Hommel’s Chemische Werke und Handelsgesellschaft mbH”.
Back in 1935, the pharma production was expanded with a trading business and an export division for pharmaceutical raw materials.
On August 15, 1961, the company headquarters moved to Müllheim/Baden – and they kicked off in a brand-new, modern building.
The company name is getting changed to »Chemische Werke Hommel GmbH«.
In 1989 the company stopped making its own pharmaceuticals and handed production over to contract companies. But several years sereafter, the company still holds a limited manufacturing license.
The company celebrates its 100th anniversary.
The company headquarters are moved to Lüdinghausen / North Rhine-Westphalia.
Hommel Pharma GmbH & Co. KG was founded to bring the pharmaceutical rights under the company’s own roof. On the occasion of the 110th company anniversary, HPP-Hommel Pharmaceuticals Produktion GmbH was established in Barleben (Magdeburg). Among other things, the company sterilizes steroids (for example via filtration) and micronizes them under sterile conditions.
In January 2004, the current business of Chemische Werke Hommel GmbH was handed over by Dr. K.-P. Völkl to his son, Thorsten-R. Völkl. To keep the business going, Chemische Werke Hommel GmbH & Co. KG was founded.
In December 2006, Chemische Werke Hommel GmbH & Co. KG moved into their new place at Lindenstraße - still located in Lüdinghausen.
In November, the company moved again within Lüdinghausen and is now based on Robert-Bosch-Straße. At the same time, they decided not to run their own warehouse and instead team up successfully with a major local freight forwarding company.
We’re moving to a new building in the chemical park in Waltrop. – New city, new success.
There are some personnel restructuring measures at Hommel until an optimal team is found.
April 2026: Dr. K.-P. Völkl, the previous managing director and father of the current CEO, passed away at the age of 81.
In July 2027, the company will be 135 years old since its first registration in Germany!
